we adopt a new teaching method this term, the autonomous learning, as we call it. the school sets aside about 3 million Yuan to set up an autonomous learning center with 270 computers and a study network. before it was ready for lessons, all of us had pictured the wonderful and promising future in English teaching and the efficiency of the teaching. however, due to some technical defects and power failure, i have some very depressive mornings having my english lessons there.
one question lingers in my mind now:"what does modern technology bring us?"
Time-saving or Time-wasting? A convenience or An inconvenience?
with the development of modern technology, more and more inventions appear. what's more, the inventions is upgraded so fast that you often find that the "high-tech gadget" you bought last year almost turned into a stack of rubbish compared to its pioneer product this year. then we buy a new one, we lag behind others, and we buy the latest one... everytime we buy a new thing, we spend a lot of time to learn the instructions. and i find that the electronic products nowadys break down so easily. i bought a new MP3 to my father last year, and it broke down twice by far. everytime it broke down, we had to wait 15 days for the repairment, thus causing much inconviniece to us, because we are so used to the life with it, we can't live without it now.
take the invention of cars for another example. its invention is supposed to enable us to travel faster and more conviniently. however, what happens now? the traffic jams for hours! pollution apart, the car slows us down instead of speeding us up. everytime i see the traffic jams in our city during the rush hour, i feel i am lucky that i don't have a car myself. if i had a car, i should spend time to learn driving, memorize the traffic rule, drive my cars for car maintenance, have it fixed when it breaks down...how much time would i waste on a car, i wondered.
and let's go back to my classroom. when i began my teaching in the year 2000, my students and i had a not-bad time, learning english and playing interesting games together. there weren't enough english language labs for listening course, so the teachers carried a radio cassette recorder to the classroom and played the tapes. Thanks to the high-tech, the new language labs were built up. we felt very happy and moved our listening lessons into the labs. we were happy for only one or two years. as time went by, the language labs soon wore out. the computer broke down easily due to the virus and the earphones refuse to work because of the poor quality and improper uses by the students. precious time is wasted when the teacher arrives at the classroom one morning and suddenly finds the computer doesn't work. can we use the radio cassette recorder? NO! all the listening materials are stored in the U-disk and brought to the classroom! we have no choice but to wait for the technician, who can always be rather busy or lazy.
what does modern technology really bring to us? now i am also thinking about another quesiton:" if my computer breaks down right now and this article suddenly disappear, how will i feel and what should i do?"
An Outlook on Future
What will the future be?There are likely to be numerous potential breakthroughs and achievements in science and technology.Solutions to current social and economic problems will be found.In the field of industry,agriculture and service industry,possible products and manufacturing methods might be realized.Hi-tech industry could develop faster.The living environment will be cleaner and satisfactory.People will lead a carefree life.Higher education will be available to every knowledge-thirsty person.
It is hard to detail visions on people’s beautiful life.Future is indeed like a riddle,some areas of which are beyond the reach of our imagination.
Nevertheless,one thing is certain:the advancement of science and technology will characterize the future.Only through mastering advanced science and technology can a nation be successful in facing more challenges of technological revolution and social progress
